Daily Devotional Bible Verses
I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children. For though you have countless guides in Christ, you do not have many fathers. For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel. (1 Corinthians 4:14-15 ESV)
I was recently listening to sports talk radio and they were discussing the athletes, who are gifted and talented, that get into college/professional sports and do stupid things outside of the sport. They might get into fights, do drugs, or get in trouble with the wrong crowd. The sports talk host said that the one thing that the majority have in common is that they don’t have a father figure or authority figure over them to rebuke them. There was nobody to sit them down and say, “You are embarrassing us and yourself. Stop this and start acting like the person you should be.”
Just as those athletes need a father in their lives, so do we as Christians. Paul told the church in Corinth that he was their spiritual father. He was there to admonish them and help them to be the people God wanted them to be.
Do you have someone in your life who can speak truth to you when you mess up? We aren’t talking about a preacher standing behind a pulpit preaching to you. We are talking about a person who knows what is really going on in your life. It can be difficult to open up to a person about your failures, and even more difficult to give them permission to correct you. Ask God to show you who you can give permission to do this for you in your life and humbly come before them asking for their guidance.
Who is your spiritual father/mother?
