Luke 22:19 – Food is Like a Sticky Note

Have you ever used a sticky note to jot down a reminder for yourself? Maybe you stuck it to the bathroom mirror, the side of your computer screen, or even your steering wheel. In today’s verse, we see Jesus guiding the disciples in the Last Supper. He breaks the bread so everyone can have a piece. Then explains that it symbolizes his body that is about to be broken on the cross for us. And every time we eat, we should remember him.

And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19 ESV

We do this, of course, in communion or the Lord’s Supper. However, even beyond celebrating that together as family in Christ, every time we sit to eat food of any kind, it should be like a sticky note. Every piece of bread and sip of a drink should be a reminder that just like our bodies need food to live, our souls need Jesus’ sacrifice to live eternally. Whether celebrating with a feast like Thanksgiving… A special meal at Christmas or Easter… Or even a regular old dinner with your family… Every bite is to remind us of our dependence and thankfulness for Jesus. In John 6:35, Jesus said: “Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.’”

Ask yourself, your family, or your friends today:

  • How much do we love food? How much do we need it?
  • What would happen if we stopped eating food?
  • How much do we love Jesus? How much do we need him?
  • What would happen to our souls without him?
