Drifting

The term “drifting” is most commonly associated with someone being on a body of water and allowing the current to move them along. The concept of drifting is for the most part so effortless and simple that even a child could do it. With this thought in mind, I would pose the question of “What effort does it take to ‘drift along’ with the views and thoughts of someone today?” This same thought is reflected in Hebrews 2:1. “Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things that were heard, lest haply we drift away from them.” When was the last time you questioned someone about something they believed or taught concerning the Bible? Did you ask for book, chapter, and verse to support what they said? For illustration purposes, allow me to give some examples. Where in the scriptures do we find Christ, as a baby, in swaddling clothes, being presented with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh? Where can we find the scripture “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”? Where can we find the word “Rapture” in the scripture? The answer to these questions is WE CAN’T. The first question concerning Christ can be found in Matthew 2. He was a small child when these gifts were presented and the other two are just made up terms by someone. Hopefully these examples can get us to understand we should not just “drift” along with what someone says concerning matters of the Bible. If you were to get into the Niagara River and just “drift” along, what will eventually happen is a huge drop over Niagara Falls, which most likely would be your death. The Bible gives us the warning signs of “danger ahead” as we start drifting, but if we don’t heed these warnings, we will certainly face death for eternity. It takes more effort to go against the flow of things, especially in spiritual matters. It takes determination or diligence as we read in 2 Timothy 2:15. In the book of Joshua 24, verse 15, a profound statement is made going against those who were drifting along when Joshua said “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” A choice was made to not go along with everyone else, but to battle the way upstream for safety. The spiritual safety I hope we’re searching for can only be found in the word of God. It will require us to accept the word fully, to study and not just accept what the “preacher” says. I ask you to challenge yourself and others, INCLUDING ME, to show from the scriptures in its correct context the scriptural truth. I am willing to do home Bible studies with you or send you information in the mail, just ask! I post my contact information at the end of every article and would love to hear from you. The desire and will of God along with mine is that no one would drift away from this life lost for all eternity. If you have comments or questions please contact me at tmdok4@windstream.net.
