One Church

Jesus asked His disciples “Who do men say that the Son of man is?,” (Matthew 16:13-18). The reply: “Some say, John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets” (16:14). Then Jesus asks “But who say ye that I am?” (16:15). Peter gave this response “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God” (16:16). Now notice how Jesus responds to the statement Peter just made in answer to the question “Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jonah: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father who is in heaven. And I also say unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it (16:17-18). Paul in his writing to Timothy, made known it was God’s plan to save men through Christ even before the foundation of the world (2 Timothy 1:9). Jesus made it known He would provide escape through a plan that would result in the establishment of His church, His body, bride, the elect, etc. Christ stated there would be one church. Paul in his writings stated that Christ “is the head of the body, the church” (Colossians 1:18). In Ephesians 1:22, he stated concerning Christ that God “gave him to be head over all things to the church, which is his body.” I don’t believe for a moment there is any misunderstanding that the body is the church. In Ephesians 4:4, Paul stated: “There is one body, one Lord, one faith and one baptism. Christ is the Savior of the body (Ephesians 5:22) not many bodies. The body is the church (Ephesians 1:22-23; Colossians1:18,24). The body, Christ’s church, would be known as “the church of the Lord” (Acts 20:28), “the church of God” (1 Corinthians 1:2; Galatians 1:13), “the house of God” (1 Timothy 3:15), “the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10), and “the kingdom of God” (Acts 28:23, 31). All of these names are scriptural and designate one church / body, the one which Christ purchased with His blood. Christ stated “All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth” (Matthew 28:18). Having such authority from His Father, He alone possessed the right to be Head of the church, His singular body of believers (Ephesians 1:22-23; Colossians 1:18). Until next week this is the Scriptural Truth. Tommy O’Kelley Minister Subligna Rd. Church of Christ (706) 638-1129 or (423) 413 – 5319, email tmdok4@windstream.net
