Scriptural Truth – What Will The Seed Produce?
Like many folks in our area my family and I like planting a garden and enjoy eating the fresh vegetables it produces. After we decide what we want in our garden we plant the seeds with the expectation they will produce the vegetables they are supposed to produce. We don’t plant beans and expect corn, nor okra and expect tomatoes. I believe all who plant a garden expect the same results as we do. To bring this illustration to a spiritual application let us consider Christ’s church. There seems to be the mindset that many different kinds of seeds will produce the same church. In Matthew 16:18 Christ promised to build His church and in Ephesians 5:23 we read that Christ is head of the church and Savior of the body. Now, imagine rows of green beans producing tomatoes, okra, cucumber and peppers along with the beans, would this make sense? I believe all would agree the impossibility because we know that every seed produces after its own kind. Today, however, many believe that the seed, which is the word of God (Luke 8:11), will produce variations of the singular Church Christ promised to build. We do read of the vine and branches in John 15:5 but all of the branches are of the same main vine, meaning they are all the exact same type of vine. Christ promised and has built one Church which is His body and he is the head of the body. Wouldn’t it make sense that all the body be exactly the same if it’s part of the same head? In Acts 2:41 & 47 the scriptures state individuals gladly received the word, were baptized and that day about 3,000 souls were added to them and the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. Individuals became part of one Church and they were immediately added and identified as the Church. The Church in Acts 2 is the same Church as seen in Ephesians 5 which Christ purchased with His blood thus making it His Church or the church of Christ. If different spiritual seeds can produce the same church, Christ’s Church, and be exactly the same as the true vine then why can’t we plant several rows of beans in our gardens and harvest various types of vegetables?
