Scriptural Truth – Are you In Christ or Out of Christ
People are involved in and part of a variety of many organizations such as clubs, sports, schools, businesses and so on. To be in one of these organizations means that one receives the benefits from being in them. The benefits offered by these organizations are not offered to those outside of the organization itself. The same is true from a spiritual standpoint concerning spiritual blessings such as forgiveness and salvation. Notice the following from Ephesians 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.” The ending of this verse says “in Christ” and the word “in” is a preposition indicating a fixed position. So the question is where are spiritual blessings such as forgiveness and salvation found? The answer is revealed, they are “in Christ,” The next question one should ask is how does one get into Christ? This same question is asked in some fashion when one wants to become part of and join a club or organization. For one to be in Christ and have access to the spiritual blessings they must become a member of Christ and his body. The church is the one body of Christ (Eph. 4:4) and belongs to him. He purchased the church with his own blood (Eph.5:25, Acts 20:28), so certainly he has all authority for how one can be part of his church. The Lord is loving so much so that he wants everyone to become part of what he died for (John 3:16). In Galatians 3:26-27 the scripture states “You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” It is faith in Christ that causes one to want to become part of him and its baptism which puts one into Christ. If one is outside of Christ then they are not part of Christ. One can’t be part of something they have not joined themselves to. In verse 29 of the same text we read “if you are Christ’s then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to promise. If one is in Christ they are part of him and will receive heaven as their reward if they are found faithful in the end (Rev. 2:10) Baptism is essential to become part of Christ no matter how you look at it. With this understanding one must conclude that baptism is necessary or essential for one to be saved because outside of Christ there is no salvation. It is the blood which cleanses us through baptism for the remission of our sins (Acts 2:38) and allows us to walk in a newness of life (Rom. 6:1-7). My last questions for you are “Are you in Christ or outside of Christ?” If you have been baptized were you baptized for the remission of your sins or because your sins were already forgiven? Remember you are either In Christ or Out of Christ and only in Christ is there forgiveness.
